Course Description+

Pre-Medical Terminology Honors is the first advanced course students take in the American Heritage School Honors Pre-Medical Program. Instruction is at the college level by a medical doctor. Students will study the language of medicine through an understanding of Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes. The course also involves the study of the human body by systems and introduces pathology and medical procedures.

Prerequisite: ”A” in previous honor science classes.

This 3-week semester course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Session dates:
Session 1A: 6/01/20 - 6/19/20 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) – 0.50 credit
Session 1B: 6/01/20 - 6/19/20 (12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) (EST) – 0.50 credit
Session 2A: 6/22/20 - 7/10/20 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) – 0.50 credit
Session 2B: 6/22/20 - 7/10/20 (12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) (EST) – 0.50 credit
Session 3A: 7/13/20 - 7/31/20 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) – 0.50 credit

3 weeks course

For 0.50 credit or audit the student should only take one session in one specified 3-week time period

Meet Dr. Carlos Pulido+

Dr. Carlos Pulido is a physician trained in and specializing in trauma surgery. He has 32 years of experience in education and has been part of the American Heritage family for 25 years. With Dr. Laurie, he developed the Pre-Med Program and continues to develop and change the curriculum and the courses as the demands change in the medical field. He was part of the beginning of the technology inclusion in education at American Heritage when he was selected to be part of a laptop pilot program and was sent to Apple Corporation to be trained as a help desk and tech specialist to troubleshoot any issues faculty or students would encounter. Dr. Pulido was part of the South Florida Task Force in Trauma and the Committee on Trauma and EMS of Florida as well as having served as an American Heart Association international advisor. He was the medical officer for the EMS division for the City of Pompano Beach Fire and EMS Departments.

Meet Dr. Diana Sood+

Dr. Diana Sood is an advisor, mentor and a teacher at American Heritage School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Florida International University and her Medical Doctorate degree at Universidad Iberoamericano in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She has worked with an orthopedic surgeon as a surgery coordinator/educator/ researcher. Her job involved helping patients prepare for surgery, post surgery, and postoperative procedures. Her responsibilities also included research with a well-known orthopedic knee and hip replacement surgeon with research papers soon to be published. She has worked at American Heritage for the past 5 years, teaching pre-medical classes and Biology Honors classes. During the summer, she serves as a research mentor for the Summer Science Institute and helps students advance in their research skills. Dr. Sood takes great joy teaching and helping students advance their knowledge in the medical and science fields. She is also proud to be an advisor for HOSA, a student organization for future health professionals, at American Heritage.

Meet Dr. Cindy Hernandez+

Dr. Cindy Hernandez is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in medical and surgical ophthalmology. She is an anterior segment surgeon who specializes in refractive cataract surgery. Additionally, Dr. Hernandez continues to provide emergency and trauma ophthalmology services to her community. Prior to medical school, Dr. Hernandez earned her Master in Science in Human Nutrition through the University of Florida. She had the opportunity to collaborate with the Public Health educational programs for the state of Florida. Her love of learning about the human body started early, as she comes from a family of physicians and has always enjoyed the art of teaching and mentoring aspiring future physicians, as she saw this growing up. She enjoys sharing her passion for medicine with her students. She has been an active member of the American Heritage School Pre-Medical program through teaching the Medical Terminology course, participating in the clinical internship program, and guest didactic lectures for the pre-medical society since 2016.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll. A specific teacher is not guaranteed. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording. Students must be age appropriate for the course. Young children must be supervised by a parent at all times. It is the parent’s responsibility to check with their child’s school when seeking credit for a course.
