Chemistry Honors is an advanced course and in-depth study of the established principles of chemistry. Students will discover relationships between the structure and properties of matter and will use the knowledge to produce new materials. The course will cover topics such as atomic structure, periodic table, bonding, chemical names and formulas, mole relationships, balancing and predicting reactions, stoichiometry, behavior of gases, solutions, reaction rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox reactions. This class is very math intensive. This course is required for students who are planning to complete the Honors Medical Professions Program.
Honors level classes can expect more rigorous requirements for assignments and assessments.
Prerequisite: 'A' in previous honors level science classes, completion of Honors Algebra 1.
This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Meet Dr. Julia Couper+
Julia Couper has been teaching and tutoring Honors and CP Chemistry at American Heritage School for eight years. Prior to teaching chemistry, she earned a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia, conducted clinical research, and wrote scientific journal articles. Dr. Couper sponsors two clubs at the school, Communiteens (focused on community service and outreach) and Healthy Heritage (focused on living an eco-friendly lifestyle).
Meet Ewa Wojcik+
Ewa Wojcik is a Florida certified teacher of chemistry who has 10 years of teaching experience in chemistry and biology combined, both at high school and university levels. She joined the faculty of American Heritage School in 2014 teaching Chemistry Honors and AP Chemistry. Teaching at the university level has allowed Ewa to publish meaningful peer-reviewed research in the Journal of Spectroscopy. As a multidisciplinary scientist, Ewa likes to share her experience and knowledge with her students. The positive impact of her teaching methods and experience is directly seen in her students' 90% passing rate on the National AP Chemistry exam.
