This enrichment course is for students entering 6th grade who are looking for an advanced curriculum and wish to increase skills in the areas of literature analysis, composition, and grammar, style, and usage. Students will develop strong writing habits by reading various texts and writing companion pieces of poetry, prose, essays, blogs, and emails. Explicit grammar instruction will further sentence structure and fluency. Deep analysis of texts of all kinds will develop vocabulary and expose students to the organization, purpose, and audience of each genre of writing.
Eppie Astudillo has 16 years of teaching experience. She has taught middle school English at American Heritage for 5 years. She has a BS in Mass Communication with a concentration in print journalism from Florida International University. She also holds Gifted and ESOL endorsements on her teacher certification. She has been one of the coordinators for the Junior High Literary Fair for the past four years, which has been an avenue for students to showcase their creative writing. She also enjoys her work as a volunteer for the Junior High First Priority Club.
A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll. A specific teacher is not guaranteed. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording. Students must be age appropriate for the course. Young children must be supervised by a parent at all times. It is the parent’s responsibility to check with their child’s school when seeking credit for a course.
