Course Description+

Students who are working below grade level entering fourth grade will benefit greatly from this curriculum designed to give individual attention to each student. Basic skills of language arts, reading, and math are reinforced using a variety of teaching techniques and materials tailored to each student’s skill level. Executive functioning is incorporated into the daily syllabus, including study skills, organization, and problem solving.

Session 1A: 6/01/20 - 6/19/20 (8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.) (EST)
Session 2A: 6/22/20 - 7/10/20 (8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.) (EST)
Session 3A: 7/13/20 - 7/31/20 (8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.) (EST)

Each session is unique, so your child will benefit from taking more than one session.

Meet Christina Mikkelsen+

Christina Mikkelsen, a 21 year veteran of teaching, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master’s in Special Education. She has taught at American Heritage School for 13 years; the majority of those years were spent as the third grade teacher. While at American Heritage School, she has been nominated as Teacher of the Year and has worked with Student Government and the Technology Team

Meet Jayme McMahon+

Jayme McMahon is currently a faculty member at American Heritage School. She earned a MS in Special Education for Birth-12th grade from Long Island University. She has been teaching for 10 years and has taught grades kindergarten through 8th grade. She has taught the lower school enrichment courses for the Summer Institute for 5 years.

Meet Jill Brown+

Jill Brown is a 17 year veteran teacher. This is her 3rd year at American Heritage School. She has worked in the classroom and outside of the classroom developing and supporting teachers with professional development and curriculum. She has led educational meetings both in a school setting, as well as larger venues. She feels most passionate about education experiences that foster relationship building with students. Jill has always felt a need to help children of all ages with social-emotional growth and well being, as well as knowledge attainment. She has a Master’s in Guidance Counseling and plans to seek her Doctorate in the near future.

Meet Lauren Kramer+

Lauren Kramer is a veteran teacher with 20 years of teaching experience. For the past eight years she has taught at American Heritage School and has been Director of Reading for the last five years. She runs Cover to Cover, a campus book club. She was voted Teacher of the Year in 2015. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Reading, with additional certification in ESOL (K-12). She is in the process of completing her National Board Certification.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll. A specific teacher is not guaranteed. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording. Students must be age appropriate for the course. Young children must be supervised by a parent at all times. It is the parent’s responsibility to check with their child’s school when seeking credit for a course.
