Choosing the Right Summer Program for Your Child

Choosing a summer program is about more than just finding a place for your children to go during the summer break

The summer break is an excellent time for students and families to rest, recover, and enjoy some warm weather fun. While this is an excellent and worthwhile break for families, it can be too much of a good thing.

Research shows that students of all ages can lose up to six weeks of grade-level equivalency while languishing on summer vacation. For some students, this can represent a serious problem at the start of the new year, as it can potentially put a student up to half a semester behind before the academic year even begins.

It is therefore advisable to incorporate summer programs into your family holiday plans to keep your children active and learning all year-round. Read on to discover how you can choose the right summer program for your child.

Identify a summer goal

The best way to choose a summer program for your child is to identify key goals for summer learning. You know your child better than anyone else – what areas of your child’s development will benefit the most from a summer program?

Perhaps your child could use some outdoor activity after too many weeks of sleeping in and watching T.V. during the break. Or, perhaps he or she could use some help with social skills and self-confidence. Maybe he or she has an interest or creative pursuit that does not get enough attention during the busy academic year.

Identifying these key areas for improvement will help you narrow down the search for a program. For the restive or inactive child, a sports camp. For the child that needs a boost in social skills, a leadership program. Children who want to explore interests and creativity can do so with STEM or Arts programs. Whatever the case may be, choose a program that is tailored to your child’s unique needs or areas of interest.

Encourage new experiences

Once you have identified your summer goal, consider how a summer program might encourage your child to step out of his or her comfort zone. People of all ages resist change, and children especially can find it difficult to step out into the unknown and try something new.

Summer is a perfect time to gently encourage new experiences through a fun and exciting camp or institute. Creating ta safe opportunity for students to try new skills is important for growth and development – the best summer programs are those that help students step outside of the box by fostering a safe and encouraging environment in which to try new things.

Research high-quality programs

When you are ready to book your summer programs, make sure to do thorough research on the organizations hosting the camp, institute, or course. Qualified, capable teachers and staff have a big impact on the student experience.

It is a good idea to research online by reading reviews and testimonials. You can also connect with other parents who have previously enrolled children in the event to get a firsthand perspective on the quality of the program.

A high-caliber program will have solid reviews both online and from families who have previously participated. By choosing an excellent program, you can ensure that your child will have a fun and productive summer, which will set him or her up for a strong start to the school year.
